As someone who grew up in nearby Surrey, another county of gentle hills, streams, scattered villages and market towns, Lutyens responded to Kent’s landscape with great sympathy and insight inspiring some of his most creative and beautiful designs. The county of Kent was also the birthplace of Herbert Baker who throughout his lifetime took inspiration from the distinctive topography and building styles of Kent.
