In Service of Lutyens: A Study of Kitchens and Service Rooms

William Clarke, raised in Memphis and educated at the University of Notre Dame, developed his design philosophy in New York City, where he spent a decade working with John B. Murray Architect and Roman and Williams on projects distinguished by their sophisticated blend of traditional character and contemporary relevance. He later relocated to Atlanta to join McAlpine, further refining his expertise in modern traditionalism. In 2023, he was named the inaugural Lutyens Trust America Travelling Fellow, undertaking immersive research on the residential work of Sir Edwin Lutyens—an influence that continues to inform his practice. Now based in Chicago, William Clarke brings a national perspective to his work across the city, the North Shore, and beyond, specializing in homes that balance classical proportions with modern living.

The Lutyens Trust America is pleased to announce the winner and finalists for the Lutyens Traveling Fellowship 2023.

The Lutyens Traveling Fellowship was founded to promote the appreciation and knowledge of the work of Sir Edwin Lutyens by funding a period of individual travel and research on his work and legacy. The Lutyens Traveling Fellowship provides a $7,000 award for emerging professionals in architecture, art history, interior design, historic preservation, or the decorative arts.

We would like to thank all the applicants that applied for this first annual fellowship. The level of interest was incredible and the quality of the submissions most impressive.

The jurors had a difficult task to narrow down the applicants to three highly qualified finalists: Clay Gruber & Luis Jasso, Lucas Marti Guitera, and William Clarke.
